Teaser:

Two Legionnaires drowsily leaned against their halberds at their guardpost just outside of Vonenburg, the sun setting on another cold winter’s day. They had been here since relieving the night guard. Santos’s eyelids were starting to feel like Droxa were tugging on them. No amount of coffee in the world was going to fight off his need to rest his eyes. He turned his head to Stonemill, his senior officer, and asked her, “What do you think is taking them so long to relieve us?”

“Dunno,” was Stonemill’s monosyllabic response as she stroked her beard. In all the time that Santos had worked with the Kraald, she’d never been much of a talker.

“I swear to Kishar,” Santos could feel the fire in his own voice, “if they ‘lose track of time’ gambling and carousing in the Silver Fox one more damned time…”

“Soothe, boy.” Stonemill lifted a hand to stifle her junior guard as she looked into the treeline. Santos looked up and saw it too. Something was moving toward them. It looked like a frantically bobbing torchlight. At first he could barely make it out, but as it got closer he could recognize the form of their afternoon relief, a wiry Kaetiff named L’chev.

L’chev looked like they had been through the seven hells. Their normal cocky demeanor was replaced by a face of abject horror. Their armor was broken in spots, some of which looked like holes had been eaten through it by something. They were covered in mud, and Santos’s eyes must have been deceiving him, for it looked like L’chev was dragging a disembodied arm made of vines around their left leg.

“Prepare the defenses, sound the alarm! Open the gate and allow the Legionnaire through!” Stonemill began barking curt orders. Santos rushed off the guardpost to allow L’chev a way in. He pushed the gate open enough to give the Kaetiff a means of egress. The young guard looked out into the forest as L’chev approached and was horrified. He could swear in the distance he could see a series of red pinpricks – glowing eyes in the dark.

L’chev made their way in and Santos shoved the gate back closed.  “What in Diakonoff’s name…” He started to ask L’chev, but cut off abruptly when he caught a strange scent. Santos turned his nose to the sky. He breathed in deep and squinted quizzically. He turned back to L’chev and asked  “…Do you smell smoke?
