Teaser:
“Boy! More wine!” the voice rang out through the makeshift feasting hall and Wene’El rushed over with his wineskin. Aran’Edena put out his tankard and the boy poured, careful not to spill a drop. He didn’t need another fist to the jaw. Wene’El cursed to himself. This was not the life he had in mind when he joined up with the Aerous Tribe last cycle after they raided his village. He topped off Telu’Sori and the Kili one, Antoniel, waved him off.
Wene’El quickly faded back into the shadows right when the screaming started again. Mother Kishar, the Tribal Chief had been in that back room for a while. The voice wailed and cried. It sounded more like a wounded animal than a Fei’tandel.
“Why doesn’t he just kill the poor sap already?” Telu’Sori mused aloud.
Aran’Edena answered absently “Heard the prisoner’s a Yal’Alcoa, one of the past singers. Maybe the Chief is trying to extract some knowledge out of him before ending him.”
Wene’El poured wine and listened to the other Aerougeons talk. Wene’El thought to himself, these Aerougeon were nothing like the ones he’d heard about in the stories growing up. This is not the life he thought he was agreeing to when he took up with them. Such a barbaric group. Though he was blooded last moon, Wene’El didn’t feel like he earned the ‘4 dots over a line’ facial marking that represented the great protectors of Fei’tandel lore.
Aran’Edena slogged down his wine in one gulp and began to speak “Boy! Mo–”Just then the backroom door burst open. The Tribal Chief himself walked out. Wene’El was shocked to see him carrying a bloody, severed hand. Through the door behind him, Wene’El could hear choked down cries of pain.
“M-my Chief,” Wene’El sputtered out as he started to pour a glass of wine, “there’s a seat right here… wait. Where did Antoniel go?”
